I have been debating how to approach this day and decided I will just say it how it was and not pretend it was a regular old day. This morning there was news that Alex’s uncle had passed away and I suppose it was lucky in one way that Alex was with his family for this – to share support with those who knew and loved him.
I left it up to Alex to decide whether to ride on or not – and he opted for the consolation of the bike.
The road out of Peterborough was not particularly nice. It was a busy highway with lots of traffic and not much to look at for awhile. We stopped at a reptile zoo and enjoyed the critters – and the animated life-size dinosaur display.
Stopped for french toast, stopped for ice cream, stopped for subway & tea, and then finally set up camp on the side of the highway 5 km east of Kaladar. Tomorrow we will reach Ottawa – I was excited as a cyclist to leave the terrible roads of Ontario behind and now in real-time, I am excited as a writer to be moving on to Quebec!

Hi Deanna, Well written. I was also thinking it was fortunate that Alex was at my Mom’s when the news came. Also my brother would have wanted Alex to continue his adventure of a lifetime. I am sure it was hard to push forward, but I am glad he did.
Hugs, Barb
