Back in Northern Ontario we visited a town called Dryden – and we got all excited thinking Alex had a friend from there. We were disappointed to find out we had confused it with Drayton – but after weeks of suspense, we finally arrived! This was the first stop today!
For this reason alone, it was very exciting! Unfortunately there really no options for breakfast except a small cafe with a very limited menu – I think we ate a few muffins a piece…. then rode around the streets taking pictures – the school, the church, the graveyard, what could have been his friend’s house, etc, etc. There was an unfortunately strong smell of cow wafting about town and I was happy when we moved on…. sorry Chris….
The ride was lovely until we hit Guelph and had to join a busy highway – and again no shoulder!! Seriously. What is wrong with the people who do the roads??? It started to rain along this stretch as well…. I was miserable. Big trunks rolled by me so close the hairs on the skin stood on end – they did not want me on the road. I did not want to be on the road. I was overcome with a slight bought of self pity and a few tears joined the rain water streaming down my face. Then I remembered that I am doing exactly what I want to be doing in this moment, bucked up my courage, and pedalled like mad to get out of this hellish area.
We were lucky to be passing through Kitchener in the one week Siggy was back at home during his own bike trip. We met up for dinner and ended up sleeping in his basement…. well I slept in the basement but Alex opted to put his tent in the front yard – something about the glory of fresh air…… :)
